Israeli forces kill Palestinian woman in Al-Khalil

He said she had been on her way to her sister’s house for lunch when she was killed. The violence was originally focused in and around Jerusalem, but the epicentre later moved largely to Hebron.

Amid the 37,000 Palestinians that live there, thousands of soldiers are stationed in the “H2 area” of the city – under full Israeli military control – to protect the 600-strong Jewish settler population. Searches for the assailants were underway.

The city is also home to the al-Ibrahimi Mosque, known to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and the site where the Biblical prophet Abraham is believed to be buried.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting. Hebron is a stronghold of the Islamic militant Hamas.

On Friday afternoon, a man in his 40s was seriously wounded when he was stabbed in a West Bank industrial park north of Jerusalem.

Less than two hours later, an Israeli was seriously wounded by gunfire near Beit Anoun.

The health ministry said in an official emailed statement that Tharwat Sha’rawi, 72, died after she was critically wounded when Israeli soldiers opened fire at her while she was driving her auto near Hebron. Footage on Israeli TV showed bullet holes in the car’s front and back windshields. “There is no way she wanted to run over soldiers”. “The assailant fled the scene”.

Al Sharawi is one of 74 Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces since tensions escalated in mid-September.

The Palestinian Authority’s representative to the United Nations accused Israel of harvesting the organs of Palestinians killed while attacking Israelis.

Hundreds of Tunisians, including political figures, gathered in the capital Saturday for a demonstration called by the Islamist party Ennahda in support of the Palestinian “uprising” against Israel.

The violence since October 1 has seen more than 70 Palestinians – around half of them alleged attackers – an Arab-Israeli and nine Israelis killed.
