Apple launches new shopping App Store category

If you open the App Store on your iOS device or in iTunes, you will see a dedicated Shopping category, and it’s packed full of great apps. Earlier, all these features were listed under “Lifestyle” category.

The category’s home page features a handful of promoted collections, such as apps that include support for Apple Pay, fashion apps, and separate sections for department and grocery stores. And as even a cursory look through that category will tell you, Lifestyle is so ill-defined as to include content ranging from dating apps to real estate apps to smart home apps. One highlighted app is called Save While You Shop. Gilt, Groupon, Nordstrom, and Walgreens’ apps will be listed there, among others. By removing shopping related apps on the Lifestyle section, the launch of the new category will have a huge impact in the rankings of apps. These include Zappos and Aldo, which offer free shipping, and Everlane and Nordstrom, which promise freebies with purchases. The company was long rumored to be working on a Shopping category for App Store, but had not confirmed anything about it. It has today released the Shopping category to help consumers better locate mobile shopping applications.

Now that a new Shopping category is introduced, this could help boost the discoverability and download of apps that devote to mobile shopping.
