Maicon stars as Roma regain top spot

Rudi Garcia wants Roma to become more ruthless in front of goal following their 1-0 defeat to Inter on Saturday that saw their hosts overtake them in Serie A. “Being dominated so much by our opponents hurts my soul”.

Miralem Pjanic on Wednesday opened scoring for Roma just four minutes into the match before Douglas Maicon extended their lead five minutes later, reported Xinhua.

Don’t dwell on this one too long, we’ve got Bayer Leverkusen and Lazio on the weekend to worry about.

At the San Siro, AC Milan’s underwhelming season continued as they could only manage a 1-0 win over Chievo.

Roberto Mancini’s wards finally won one again on Tuesday against lowly Bologna, 1-0, at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara courtesy of team captain Mauro Icardi’s lone goal at the 67th minute, as reported by Goal.

Lazio was three points back – with Sassuolo – after losing 2-1 at Atalanta.

Radja Nainggolan threaded the ball through to Maicon, who rolled across from the right for Pjanic to slot inside the near post.

An injury-time goal from Diego Laxalt, his second of the match, earned Genoa a 3-3 draw at Torino and Paolo Sammarco’s 91st-minute victor gave Frosinone a 2-1 triumph over rock bottom Carpi.

Napoli also achieved their fifth consecutive victory, beating Palermo 2-0.

As Inter sought to kill the game off, Wojciech Szczesny brilliantly denied Marcelo Brozovic, but it mattered little as Inter hit top spot, although the tight nature of Serie A’s title race could see Napoli or Fiorentina overtake them on Sunday.

Juventus continue to suffer and were defeated by Sassuolo 1-0 with a goal by Sansone.

Giorgio Chiellini was also sent off for Juve. “It will be an exciting game, we train every day to play games like this”.

“I don’t think the match will be decisive, but it will be important for both”.

Juventus went into the match sitting in 12th place, with coach Massimiliano Allegri coming under intense pressure following a few poor recent results.

Gonzalo Higuain got the opener just before half-time for Napoli, then Dries Mertens sealed the win 10 minutes from the end.

Fiorentina had Nikola Kalinic to thank against Verona.
