Ovechkin ties Fedorov for goals by Russian player

Ovechkin recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season and the 483rd of his career in the second period of Saturday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The duo is tied for 49th place on the all-time list, with Ovechkin ready to set record for a Russian – and tie Darryl Sittler for 48th – with his next goal. Brayden Schenn had a power-play goal in the first period, Wayne Simmonds scored just his second goal of the season at 9:44 of the third period and Matt Reade scored his third goal of the season into an empty net with 1:35 left in the game.

Ovechkin, who has more goals than any player since entering the League in 2005, reached the milestone in 772 games, 476 fewer than Fedorov, who scored 483 goals in 1,248 NHL games, including 70 for the Capitals before he retired after the 2008-09 season. “And he’s doing it in an era where it’s harder to score. When I see those numbers, that’s what blows me away”.

The Maple Leafs look to shake off a loss at home against the Red Wings last night as they head into Washington to take on the Capitals.

“It’s a huge honour because of all the great names in Russian Federation hockey and he is No. 1”, Ovechkin said. “He was like a player and a coach at the same time”.

Neuvirth stopped 28 shots as the Flyers halted a six-game losing streak and capped a five-game road swing. Listless and bored are two words which aren’t associated with Ovechkin.

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jeff Skinner scored with 3.3 seconds left in regulation on Carolina’s 43rd shot against Andrew Hammond, and Jordan Staal won it in overtime.

“I think as a team, we are getting better and that’s the most important thing”, Reilly said. He can break open a game when it is tied, he can get you a big goal, and it seems like it can happen at any time. I’m not sure there is anyone quite like that.
