The club’s three owners have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.
The owner of Expirat, one of Bucharest’s busiest nightclubs, tucked away in a basement in the popular Old Town, said he was shutting it down. “Starting today I can no longer risk lives”, Andrei Sosa said on Facebook.
Hundreds of mourners made their way to Colectiv on Monday to lay flowers and light candles for the victims. Carantino said seven patients at the hospital have critical injuries from the Friday night blaze and stampede.
About 90 of the victims are still seriously ill in hospital as doctors treat them for complex burns. Sorin Bogdan, a local journalist, stated to BBC that the club was converted from a former factory with just two small exit doors, with only one door having the ability to be opened.
Preliminary forensic tests show the victims died from inhaling noxious gases. Officials say the death toll from the tragedy is likely to rise. “Weekend after weekend and sometimes during the week”, he said.
In Iasi, northeastern Romania, La Baza club apologized for not meeting minimum safety requirements.
The incident has raised serious questions about fire regulations and safety procedures in Romania.
“We consider we have been ignorant and irresponsible”.
“Data and evidence … have shown the fire occurred because the people managing the respective space encouraged and allowed a number of people above the club’s limit in a space that was not endowed with more emergency exits”.
In the central Romanian city of Brasov, rock club Rockstadt said it was temporarily closing, planning to replace non-fireproof insulation and install sprinklers “to make absolutely certain we will never be in… that tragic situation”.
