Bavalan Pathmanathan, 24, was batting for south London and Surrey club Manipay Parish SC on Sunday evening when the tragedy happened.
An Air Ambulance was called to the ground to take Bavalan to the hospital, however he could not survived.
In a statement from the cricket club on their Facebook page, they were said to be ‘totally shocked by his death at this young age.’.
Pathmanathan’s batting partner at the time described the incident in a report in the Colombo Mirror.
His team-mate told a newspaper: ‘When he received the hit I asked from the other end if he is alright.
“He was such a talented and composed cricketer and a darling friend of all of us. Every one of us is going through awful pain as a result of this awful loss”, he added.
The issue of player safety has been much discussed within cricket following the passing of ex- Australia batsman Phillip Hughes who died after being struck in the neck by a bouncer in November.
