The DTE Energy plant in Marysville, Michigan – known as the “Mighty Marysville” – had stood for more than 90 years and had become a local landmark.
Detroit News reports that the smokestacks from the power plant were visible from both sides of the St. Clair River, which separates Michigan from Ontario.
With people in two countries watching, a 93-year-old Michigan power plant out of service since 2001 has been destroyed along the U.S.-Canadian border. The implosion lasted only 20 seconds, and saw the massive structure collapse into nothing.
It began at 8am with hundreds of spectators lining the Canadian side of the St. Clair River on River Rd. Chief of Public Safety in Marysville, Tom Konik said he would like to thank everyone who came and watched the blast for following directions from the officers and adhering to the safety cordon. The property is now planned to be used for stores and housing bike trails and a marina.
