New York Senator Charles Schumer is calling for a crackdown on caffeinated peanut butter.
The company, based in Massachusetts, says the product gets its kick from green-coffee extract mixed with a base of peanuts, salt, peanut oil and agave nectar, and STEEM co-founder Chris Pettazzon called the product a time-saver, saying you could get two products in one jar.
Schumer indicated that having to think about storing the peanut butter inside a medicine cabinet instead of a kitchen cupboard should be a wake-up call for the FDA. Two tablespoons of the caffeinated peanut butter equals to about two cups of coffee.
He suggested that the agency should create clear, definite rules regarding the safe limit for the consumption of food products that contain additional caffeine.
Steem said the feds are welcome to investigate but the peanut butter is “perfectly safe when used as directed”. “If there are other obligations that we have to make STEEM more safe, we will gladly comply”.
