In the footage the shark can be seen appearing through the murky water then flying towards the cage at top speed, before showing its teeth and biting at the the cage.

It looked like a scene from the film Jaws and one diver was given just as big a scare when a great white shark crashed against the cage he was in.

“If you watch it in slow motion, the red bar in the cage is where you are supposed to put your hands”.

Gansbaai is a fishing town and popular tourist destination in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Great white sharks are considered a vulnerable species by the World Wildlife Federation.

American tourist Spencer Reilly captured the moment a great white attacks his cage off the coast of Gansbaai, South Africa.

The shark had been chasing a bait line used by the dive organisers to attract the majestic beasts and Spencer uploaded footage of the incident to YouTube yesterday.
