Well, there are about six large glasses of champagne in a bottle, which starts at about £20 for a relatively cheap brand.

Researchers at Reading University have discovered that the compound which is the black grapes – which is used to make Pinot noir and Pinot meunier – is believed to successfully prevent the onset of brain diseases.

According to the study authors, this suggests that having up to 3 glasses of champagne per week might lower the risk of developing neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Dr. Corona went on to explain that phenolic compounds in Champagne, “improve the communication between cells and encourage nerves that carry electrical signals in the brain to regenerate”.

This is the latest of many studies into the potential health benefits of moderate alcohol consumption.

Having up to two such glasses per day might reduce the likelihood of suffering a stroke, by strengthening blood vessels and halting cell damage caused by free radicals.

Researchers hope to translate their findings into concrete recommendations for people in the near future.

A spokesman for the Alzheimer’s Society told the Standard that though the results were “interesting”, “a lot more” research needed to be done.
