Telstra closes in on gigabit mobile speeds
Telstra has neared speeds of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) in mobile speed tests, the telco has revealed.

Wright said: “Our end to end tests have been achieving fantastic download speeds of over 950Mbps using a specialised speed test application, so perhaps we can now say LTE has delivered on that original vision of 4G and we can now justifiably look beyond the term “4G” to what comes next”.
It used 20 MHz each in the 700 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz ranges, as well as two 20MHz bands in the 2600 MHz frequency range, for a total of 100MHz aggregated bandwidth. That theoretical maximum speed is available only on a 4G modem that Telstra sells.
World-first demonstration combines five LTE carriers to achieve download speeds of 1 Gbps via live network.
The companies aggregated 100 MHz of Telstra’s spectrum holdings across five separate 4G channels integrated on Telstra’s extensive LTE network. But Wright says the demonstration shows that Telstra is working towards bringing its customers 1Gbps in order to increase the capacity of its networks and meet growing demand for fast mobile speeds.
Per Narvinger, head of LTE at Ericsson, adds, “With the high pace of innovation in the device and application industry, users expect high-performance coverage and the ability to use their apps anytime, anywhere”.
“In addition to Telstra consumer customers, we are preparing our networks for growth in business use, as well as emerging technologies, which rely on our ability to deliver high capacity and low-latency solutions”.
Telstra Operations group managing director of networks Mike Wright today announced the results off the testing via a blog post, which follow on from Telstra’s recent launch of a 600 Mbps-capable Category 11 device.
The telco achieved the impressive speeds by aggregating different spectrum bands on its network.
Ericsson utilised high encoding rate 256 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) for the signal to provide better peak data speeds.

The company proudly notes ‘this is the third world-first capability milestone that Telstra and Ericsson have achieved together this year, following 450 Mbps in February and 600 Mbps in September 2015’.
