Nearly half of South Koreans feel summit between Abe, Park ‘unproductive’

One key discussion during the summit was regarding the China-Japan-South Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) – where the leaders emphasised on the significance of an early ratification. This may be a contrast [to South Korea’s situation].

The Korean Peninsula was divided into the capitalistic South and the communist North after its liberation from Japan’s 1910-45 colonial rule. It is a bit more complicated when it comes to South Korea. The two sides have not been able to bridge that gap. Simply dismissing or ignoring the other side’s interpretation of past events (which often happens today) can be unsafe for the future. The country already leads the world in terms of e-government, and was ranked first by the United Nations e-government development index in 2014, with Australia, Singapore, and Japan close behind. All three leaders agreed that a nuclear North Korea is not acceptable to either.

A recent agreement to resolve a few historical grievances will not seriously assuage deep anti-Japanese sentiment in South Korea.

Japan-South Korea tensions are not simply bilateral issues, particularly given today’s contentious geopolitical landscape in the region. These could include addressing pandemic health risks, strengthening missile defense or submarine detection vis-à-vis North Korea, or responding to natural disasters or refugee crises.

A bipartisan South Korean parliamentary delegation arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a visit expected to focus on further improving relations between the two nations, a Seoul diplomat said. But only a sustained commitment beginning with their top leaderships can get this important relationship back on a productive track.
