France Praises New Step Forward Toward UN Climate Agreement

The report outlines consequences if global warming continues unabated and average global temperatures rise by a projected 4°C, melting polar icecaps and submerging land around the world that is home to up to 760 million people.

The strongest driver would be a 5 percent loss of crop yields globally by 2030, which increase to 30 percent by 2080, according to the report.

Climate change could add 12 percent to 2030 food prices in Africa, where food consumption of the poorest households amounts to over 60 percent of their total spending.

The report, “Shock Waves: Managing the Impacts of Climate Change on Poverty”, does have a ray of light, though.

Preparations could offset the coming effects, they said.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A new report says this year could be the warmest on record across the globe. “The statistics in the World Bank report are suitably shocking and I hope they force world leaders to sit up and take notice”, said Mohamed Adow of Christian Aid. To effectively solve the climate crisis we must simultaneously tackle the root causes of poverty and hunger globally.

“Global warming is borne unevenly, with the world’s poor woefully unprepared to deal with climate shocks such as rising seas or severe droughts”, the report concluded.

The worldwide community is “really excited” to see Canada back at the table for climate change talks in Paris, Canada’s new environment and climate change minister said Tuesday.

Climate change also increases the risk of waterborne diseases and the transmission of malaria, with a warming of 2 to 3°C likely to put an extra 150 million people at risk for malaria. “We need to ensure that as the costs of clean energy fall, countries can be more ambitious with their climate targets”.

According to the report, the poor are more exposed than the average population to environmental disturbances such as floods, droughts and heat waves, and when they are affected, they lose a higher share of their wealth.

The HadCRUT database showed that in the first nine months of this year, the global mean temperature had just gone above 1C, hitting 1.02 with a error factor of plus or minus 0.11C.

Efforts include the United States and other nations already pledged to scale up climate financing for developing nations that could reach $100 billion every year by 2020, in order to reduce emissions and adapt to climate change.
