Major Nelson Reveals Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Launch Line Up; Isn’t

Microsoft announced earlier this year that if you bought Gears of War Ultimate Edition on Xbox One and played it online before December 31, 2015 you would receive the entire franchise that was on Xbox 360 for free via Xbox Ones new backwards compatibility feature.

As we wait for information from Microsoft on an exact release time, let us know your last minute expectations of the update – which backwards compatibility game are you looking forward to trying out first?

Of the 104 Xbox 360 games that will be newly playable on the Xbox One this week, many previously saw retail release, including Assassin’s Creed II, Borderlands, Mass Effect, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Fable II, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Fallout 3, and Mirror’s Edge. There are still a lot of popular games that have not yet shown any indication of returning but assuming the launch of backward compatibility goes smoothly, many more titles will surely be making their way onto the Xbox One system. Numerous most requested games, like Halo: Reach, Call of Duty Black Ops and Red Dead Redemption, didn’t make this initial wave but will be coming in the near future. Since you are running in the full Xbox 360 environment you have access to the Xbox 360 console dashboard, your cloud saves, friends, multi-player and achievements that you earn or have earned on those games.

Xbox One owners can now use the Xbox Music app to listen to music while playing a game, but only with Snap. On the Xbox Feedback site, more than 21,000 people have voted for “Play Music From Apps Without Snap (Background Music)”. Having already released Halo: The Master Chief Collection, a massive collection of Halo games to feature Master Chief John 117, Microsoft seems to settled on giving users access to the Halo games they haven’t already remastered.

“This is an ongoing project for Microsoft, not a one-time deal, meaning they’re going to continue to add to the list of backwards-compatible games for quite a few time”, said P.J. McNealy, video game industry consultant with Digital World Research.

This should gain an even bigger user-base for the console, given the number of Xbox 360 customers who were likely reluctant to give up their games. Perhaps new life on the Xbox One will correct that.
