The first Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) movies on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs will arrive in early 2016, and they’ll feature High Dynamic Range (HDR), the company announced.

The first batch of 4K movies from Sony Pictures will include The wonderful Spiderman 2, Pineapple Express, Hancock, Chappie, Salt and The Smurfs 2. Newer movies like Fury and Captain Philips are in the works as well, and after being restored from the original film, the likes of Ghostbusters and The Fifth Element will make the leap to 4K, too.

The package’s “future-proof” design is flexible enough to display such features as High Dynamic Range (HDR) and object-based surround, and it’s flexible enough to house single disc or combo pack options, DEG said.

Although the Blu-ray Disc Association previously suggested that 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs would be available before Christmas, that estimate seems to have been wide of the mark. But hey, at least that gives us something to look forward to in 2016. That said, the takeup of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players will also take a while. Sony is the second studio to release ultra-high-definition video into the disc format, which is fueling speculation that the disc format will most likely see a reincarnation. The 4K Ultra HD logo will serve as the header of the package and the Ultra HD Blu-ray logo will be featured on the spine, back cover and disc. “Ten years ago this month, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment authored the world’s first feature film on Blu-ray Disc, and we continue to bring consumers the most innovative, immersive home entertainment experiences available”. According to IHS DisplaySearch, sales of 4K UHD TVs are expected to reach 100 million units by year 2019. “Ultra HD Blu-ray will provide an outstanding video and audio experience for 4K Ultra HD TV owners and the DEG is confident that this effort will be appreciated by retailers and consumers alike”.

The tours will promote the newest titles for home viewing, along with a number of 4K Ultra HD televisions. The studio also said it would reissue recent hit films in Ultra HD.
