Cam Newton named NFC Offensive Player of the Week

Dobs reportedly obtained permission from the Panthers to bring the banner into the stadium. This award comes after the Panthers’ 37-29 win over the Green Bay Packers. Dobs said Newton ran over before the game, tore the banner down and took it with him to the locker room. “It was respect”, Newton told reporters after the game.

“I would say James is our No. 1 back right now going into Detroit”, Packers coach McCarthy said Wednesday.

But the sign’s owner is crying foul. When Cam Newton came toward him, Dobs thought Newton was going to autograph his sign. “Instead he ripped the banner out of our hands”.

Mike Dobs, a Packers fan from Fayetteville, North Carolina, reported to stadium police that the banner was stolen.

Dobs also received a banner later Tuesday night from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

Dobs told WBTV Monday afternoon that Panthers President Jerry Richardson apologized and promised him a new banner. “I got pre-approval to have that banner and look what it got me”, Dobs said. “We’ve gotten a good laugh from them and I’m collecting them”, Dobs said. As he went to retrieve the ball, Green Bay linebacker and former Panther Julius Peppers kept the ball away from Newton, eventually throwing it to a ball boy near the sideline. “You’re not about to sit up here and sell a Whopper at a McDonald’s”. Dobs says a few reunions could take place in coming months.

The Panthers (8-0) have at least a two-game lead over every team in the conference – and a three-game lead over the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South – entering what would appear to be a manageable stretch of games. It’s just a respect thing. We want to make sure our policy is clear and serves the best interests of our organization. Since that report, he’s now getting angry messages, even death threats. Plus, they’re now tied for first place in the NFC North with the surprising Minnesota Vikings.
