Bookworm at Trump rally steals The Donald’s thunder

Now sitting second in the polls, Trump recently took his campaign to Springfield, Illinois, where he gave a speech that had his supporters fired up – except for one rogue reader, who seemingly would have preferred to be in the quiet coffee shop down the street.

Not just any book, either, but it seems to be Claudia Rankine’s searing poetry collection Citizen, which delves into America’s history of ongoing racial injustice.

The woman was reading the book and minding her business until an old white man made a decision to butt in and tap her on the shoulder. When she’s not reading, she often simply holds the book up, so the cover remains visible.

Donald Trump has captured the attention of the world since he announced his intention to become the Republican nominee and, if it were up to him, the next President of the United States.

Why would anyone get annoyed with someone reading a book at a rally?

The woman had apparently been busying herself with anything but offering Trump her rapt attention, including chatting with the person next to her and checking her phone.

Smartphones are widely known to be distracting. We don’t hear about friends stacking their paperbacks on the dinner table so they’ll actually talk to each other for a couple hours. One of Ben Carson’s books would be classy, but that’s probably not the case. Were you, in fact, reading Citizen? Her response? Supposedly, she said something that didn’t agree with the old man’s wishes, gestured in a snarky manner and went back to readying her book.
