Affordable Roku SE Announced

And you thought Google’s Chromecast was dirt cheap.

After launching the top-of-the-line Roku 4 last month, the Roku SE takes things down a notch for those of us who don’t want to spend $150 on a streaming media player. The device offers both HDMI and analog video out, but from the looks of it, there won’t be an Ethernet port – so users will have to rely on their home Wi-Fi for internet connectivity.

“The popularity of streaming to the TV continues to grow, and streaming players are sure to be at the top of many holiday wish lists”, said Roku Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Anderson in a press release about the new product, “The Roku SE player sets a new precedent in streaming player value this Black Friday”. The Roku SE streaming player will be priced at $49.99 but cut to $24.99 for Black Friday, and offer – for a limited period of time, anyway – a more affordable way to get streaming content from Netflix, HBO NOW, and others.

Instead, you’ll find the familiar menu system of Roku OS 7 with access to almost 3,000 streaming channels which boasts 300,000 movies and TV shows. It will come with a recommended retail price of $49.99 a pop, although the reason why it will be slashed to an all-time low of $25 is due to the Black Friday discount. Additionally, Roku says that promotions for its other streaming players might be available as well. The full Roku lineup includes the Roku 4, Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku 1, and Roku Streaming Stick.
