Honoring Our Veterans: Stories of Life During and After War

Since the majority of war dead nowadays are civilians, it seems logical to stop just honoring the military veterans, living or dead, on this day, and to repurpose the day as a true peace holiday devoted to doing everything we can to end war.

Residents will have several opportunities to honor those who served this country on Wednesday November 11 for Veterans Day.

“We do that because we know that Veterans have served all over the world in all kinds of temperature and climate extremes and they have fought and died in those same extremes”, said Daniel Button, University of Idaho veterans adviser.

American Airlines employees and family members who served during the Vietnam War era (1955-1975) were recognized and thanked for their service at a recent event at Dallas-Fort Worth global Airport.

“[Veterans Day is] a day to remember the people that gave us the freedoms to make the choices in life that we do and that we sometimes take for granted”, said Rachel Schaeffer, a student who has served in the US Navy. Ian Seagriff presents a memorial wreath on Tuesday morning, November 10 at the World War I Rainbow Division Veterans Memorial here to honor the service of past 42nd Infantry Division Soldiers for Veterans Day. At 7 p.m. on November 16, the UW-Stevens Point Veterans Club will also sponsor a free screening of the documentary “Project 22”, a film about two veterans traveling across America to raise awareness of veteran suicide.

The ceremony has traditionally occurred at three separate locations on campus: the World War I Memorial at West Gate (Old Main), the Spanish American War Memorial (south of the Corps Center) and the memorial for all Aggies who have died in our nation’s wars since World War II (on the Corps Plaza). Until 1954 Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day until President Eisenhower official changed the name.

Also, Prairie State College, 202 S. Halsted St., will host a ceremony at 12:30 p.m.in the Barnes & Noble College Auditorium.

Our support of the warfighter goes far beyond the products and services we provide. He will also give us an update on future services that will be provided for seniors.
