Jason Pierre-Paul May Potentially Face Criminal Charges After Fireworks

Editor’s note: If Coral Springs, Fla., police charge New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul with criminal possession of fireworks, he’d be subject to National Football League discipline, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

However, J.P. Pelzman of the Record reported that the Coral Springs Police Department is no longer investigating Pierre-Paul for criminal charges “unless new information surfaces”.

Multiple media outlets have reported that Pierre-Paul suffered a severe burn to the palm and three fingers of one hand and minor injuries to the other hand, and one finger might have suffered nerve damage.

It was not known whether Pierre-Paul’s injuries will impact him on the field or his arrival at training camp when the team reports July 30. Most fireworks are illegal in Florida.

Shortly before Pierre-Paul injured his hand on Saturday night, he shared a video on Instagram that showed him getting all excited next to a U-Haul van. The Giants used the franchise tag on the two-time Pro Bowler, but he is not under contract since he has not signed the tender.

The Giants reportedly pulled a long-term offer worth at least $60 million on Monday. Although the injuries are not believed to be career-threatening, Giants officials visited Pierre-Paul in the hospital Tuesday and still are trying to determine a prognosis, according to sources. Per the report, the investigation determined Pierre-Paul was not in their jurisdiction at the time.

Pierre-Paul was slowed by injuries in 2012 and 2013 and came on strong in the second half of the 2014 season, albeit against average competition, with 12.5 sacks and nine in the final five games.
