Hakeem did what he did to help Laura on her road to potential stardom, Jamal had a brief celebration with Cookie, and Lucious continued to do what he needed to for the sake of self-preservation.

Last week, the kidnapping of Hakeem looked like it could end his music career, with the young star haunted by his captors. They wind up popping chamos and sharing headphones over dinner – and it’s the most joyous moment of the episode, if not the whole season – leading to an all-night studio session where Jamal has to sneak out to avoid detection by an early-to-work Hakeem.

Now that her son is back safe, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) turns her focus back to Lyon Dynasty, trying to get her new business involved in a huge charity concert that will be broadcast on TV. Still, until Cookie finds this out, she’s only going to get closer to her new love interest.

Feeling bad for the K.O. Lucious visits the CEO in the hospital with Mimi. We’re already painting our nails with polish inspired by the Lyon family matriarch and now thanks to Hood by Air, we can pay homage to her with our clothing too. Cookie’s a boss, doesn’t take sh-t, doesn’t comply with any sort of male rules…To use the vocals in the show, it just gave off good energy.

Mystery revealed. In the last flashback, we see Lucious’ mom point to her head while chanting “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom”.

“We see Hakeem growing in a relationship, caring for someone and being willing to change and grow in order to be worthy of that relationship”, showrunner Ilene Chaiken tells Variety. I can’t say I disagree. Mimi Whiteman’s back to let everyone know that the stock isn’t performing as well as it should. (The spinning cylinder and trigger clicks of his mother’s gun add percussive sizzle to the experience.) Mimi, meanwhile, also exits the menage a trois to take a phone call that sends her into ugly-cry mode – and makes Lucious surprisingly protective of her? We’re learning more and more about him through his flashbacks with his mother.

Given HBA’s reputation for both blurring gender lines and pushing the wearability envelope, the only surprise in the surprise collection is that it’s missing any reference to what might well be the most infamous wardrobe item from the show’s first season – Rhonda’s getting-down-to-business bib.

Kelly Rowland is so great in that role.

Speaking of Andre, he finally got his mojo back!

Lucious is about to lose control of Jamal. Lucious is starting to view Freda as his protégé. What do you think ultimately brought them back together? Can we never talk of that Mimi, Lucious, April situation ever again? We don’t know, but we love it! As she said, she’s pretty enraptured by Laz. Laz says he’s going to get a few money from the concert Cookie is going to put on and will then get them ten times the money the originally asked for when they grabbed Hakeem in episode 5.
