Three dead in shooting near US university

Three people have been shot dead and another person critically injured in a shooting near the University of Maryland, Baltimore, on Tuesday.

Initial reports revealed that the gunmen emerged from two light colored vans at the 900 block of W. Fayette St.in West Baltimore, just before 11 p.m. They proceeded to shoot two males and two females, immediately claiming one fatality, reported the Baltimore Sunday.

Strong says officers found a woman and two men with gunshot wounds.

A fourth victim walked in to a local hospital seeking treatment for a gunshot wound to the buttock.

According to Newsy’s partners at WMAR, Baltimore Police homicide detectives are investigating the scene.

Strong said the woman was in a stable condition. One gunman got out of each and began firing, campus police said.

Students were advised to use caution in the area.

Baltimore has seen a spike in violence since the April death of Freddie Gray, a young African-American who died while in police custody after being arrested. That’s an increase of more than 40 per cent compared with the same time past year.

A spokesman for the university said there is no indication students were involved. The incident received widespread national attention and sparked unrest across Baltimore.

The Baltimore Sun reported that this was the second shooting in the area in less than a week. Shots were fired into a vehicle and the passenger was injured.
