Lewis Hamilton to race in Brazilian Grand Prix despite fever

However, the team insist Hamilton will be at the wheel of the all-conquering W06 this weekend and the Briton will fly to Brazil later on Wednesday, a day later than originally planned.

“He’s not going to miss the race”, a Mercedes spokesman said.

He was quoted by Sky Sports, saying: “This was the home race for Ayrton, so it was a dream of mine to race in Sao Paulo when I was younger and I always feel his presence when I’m there”.

The 30-year-old cancelled an appearance and flew to Sao Paulo a day late on doctor’s advice after he reported feeling unwell. “But he will be here tomorrow (Thursday)”.

Alonso has never won at Interlagos, a circuit where he lost world championships in 2007 and 2012, and is keen to maximise his track time this weekend after a string of reliability issues at recent races.

“With all due respect to his ambitions, I want to win there as well”, said Rosberg.

The German said he was “pumped” after Mexico, where he completed his first career hat-trick of pole, fastest lap and victory.

The Brazilian participated in free practice at the circuit in 2014 during his time as third driver at the Williams Martini Racing team, but considers racing in front of his home fans a “pleasure and honour”, and is hoping for a good result. We are still seeing progress in our pace and small improvements in every area race by race, so we know it’s important to keep our heads down and keep pushing towards the end of the season.

“The 20 horsepower advantage we once had has gone”.
