The explosion occurred just after 8 a.m. on the second floor of the house in Elizabeth.
Duane Bourne, a spokesman with Elizabethtown Gas, said a preliminary probe found no indication that gas caused the blast.
Firefighters were attempting to shore up the severely damaged house to conduct a search. Three victims from the same family, a 38-year-old woman, a 10-month-old boy and a 50-year-old man, are being treated at Trinitas. Officials have not confirmed that information.
This story has been corrected to show the number of people taken to hospitals was 14, not 15.
At least six buildings surrounding the home, which was reduced to rubble in the blast and fire, were evacuated.
Eleven others were taken to hospitals, according to the mayor.
The house and a neighboring dwelling sustained substantial damage.
An explosion in northern New Jersey that leveled a duplex “like a pancake” and knocked a next-door neighbor out of bed killed one resident and left two other people in critical condition with severe burns, officials said Wednesday.
Spokeswoman Kelly Vence tells NJ.com (http://bit.ly/1PCjKUx ) firefighters are still searching the scene on Magnolia Avenue, and three people have been flown to hospitals for treatment.
