The victim was an adult male, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said.

The blast on the second floor of the house in the 1000 block of Magnolia Avenue in Elizabeth was reported at about 8 a.m., WNBC reported.

Authorities suspect a gas leak may have caused the blast, but it is still under investigation.

ABC 7 reports the most seriously injured person is a 19-year-old woman, while the other injured victims range in age from 10 months to age 50. “That’s not to say the person is still in the building”.

“We are going through the building in a secondary search looking for the possibly unaccounted-for person”, Bollwage said.

A spokesperson for the Elizabeth Fire Department could not immediately be reached.

“Where the explosion came from, we are not sure”, McNamara said, adding that it’s going to take “quite a while to make sure the area is safe”. “It would have been a whole different ballgame”.

“It sounded like a plane crash and I thought it was because we are so close to the airport”, Kayon Pryce, who lives next door, told NJ.com. It also damaged seven houses nearby, including three which will have to be demolished. “The explosion actually tossed my bed upward, tossed me out of bed and knocked my phone out of my hand. I’m just happy to be alive”. All the occupants were taken to local hospitals, the mayor said.
