Jim Tomsula Praises Blaine Gabbert, Says QB Situation to Be Evaluated Weekly

The 49ers, then 2-6, displayed an offensive pulse and beat a 6-2 team.

“I’m not out of breath, so I don’t understand that reference”, Kaepernick said.”Blaine has been here for two years and I’ve watched Blaine get here better every day”, Tomsula added. “He really did a nice job, so congratulations to him”.

Neither quarterback was available for comment Monday. The decision to give Gabbert another start seems obvious, but Tomsula said he would meet with his staff today before picking a starter.

The first-year coach acknowledged he later briefed general manager Trent Baalke and the team hierarchy of that move. The change at quarterback along with the influx of energy provided by the 49ers young defensive players proved to be beneficial.

The decision didn’t come as a surprise.

“Each game we have is a championship game opportunity”, Quinn said. To put it in bigger perspective, Jim Harbaugh in his entire coaching tenure (College and NFL) has been successful, yet in only one of those seasons he has strayed away from the system he used with Kaepernick behind center, and that was in 2014 where the 49ers went 8-8 and we saw an extreme drop in read option explosive plays from Kaepernick.

Gabbert completed 15 of 25 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s 17-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons had 12 turnovers in their previous four games. The 49ers’ 133 rushing yards were their most since the season opener. Now they’ll get to find out if it was a fluke or if they may have something with their backup. With Reggie Bush (knee) on injured reserve and Jarry Hayne on the practice squad, that means the team’s running backs against the Falcons will be Kendall Gaskins, Shaun Draughn and Pierre Thomas, none of whom were on the active roster last Friday.

An offense that scored six touchdowns over 60 minutes – in the second half against Dallas and the first against Houston the next week – has managed nine the past five games. “So, we have to go back to the drawing board”. We’re seeing that those fourth-quarter comebacks weren’t necessarily a function of Quinn’s emphasis on “finishing”. “Blaine did a nice job, a few really, really good things with his feet and his arm and his brain”, Tomsula said.

Tomsula said he met with Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick on Monday afternoon to inform both of his decision to stick with Gabbert when the 49ers return from the bye week to play at the Seattle Seahawks on November 22. But I thought across the board, offensively, everybody stepped it up, and we did a better job, and I was happy to see that.

Coinciding with Celek’s breakout game Sunday was the fact Vernon Davis had been traded earlier in the week to Denver. “I think a lot of factors will go into that”.
