Seattle’s famed gum wall cleaned for the first time in decades
A three-man crew began removing the more than one million gum wads with high-pressure steam cleaners on Tuesday and were expected to finish the job today, Emily Crawford, a spokeswoman for Pike Place Market, where the infamous Gum Wall is located, told AFP.

The decision was met with a flood of nostalgia from people who had visited the wall, from smitten newlyweds to degenerate drunks who, apparently on the brink of total mental collapse, were known to sometimes eat the gum late at night.
Cape Town – An alley in Seattle that has become a popular tourist attraction over the past two decades has been stripped of its rather disgusting charm. Officials intend to weigh all the gum they gather in order to determine an exact measurement.
Jessica Wang, visiting from Los Angeles, has her photo taken at Seattle’s gum wall the day before it was steam-cleaned.
A few of the gum pieces plastered to the walls have been molded into messages, hearts and other shapes.
Jessica Wang, left, and Michael Teylan, both of Los Angeles, use a selfie stick at Seattle’s “gum wall” at Pike Place Market, Monday, November 9, 2015. “The market is famous for the gum wall”. And if you haven’t, you’d better hurry up, because it’s getting scrubbed down for the first time in 20 years.
JC: There are probably 10 or 15 pieces of my gum on that wall. It’s going to look like crap. “We need to wipe the canvas clean and keep fresh”.

JC: Maybe we should boycott it.
