It is also the second-highest price ever for a work of art at auction, second only to Pablo Picasso’s Women of Algiers, which sold for $179 million at Christie’s in May.
Though the name of the buyer was anonymous at the time of the auction, Bloomberg later revealed that Modigliani’s masterpiece was now the possession of Chinese billionaire Liu Yiqian.
The painting – produced between 1917 and 1918 – scandalized Paris when it was first exhibited, prompting police to shut down the exhibition.
On Monday, Christie’s “Artist’s Muse” theme attracted a measure of skepticism – in addition to Modigliani’s nude, it also included the 1981 Warhol silk-screen painting, “Gun”. In a private sale, Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev reportedly paid $118 million for a work from hedge fund manager Steven A. Cohen’s collection. “This painting leaps off the page as the most vibrant, sexual, lyrical of the catalogue raisonne”, said Ana Maria Celis, a Christie’s specialist in postwar and contemporary art. The sale propelled Modigliani into the $100 million Auction Club, whose members include Picasso, Bacon, Giacometti, Warhol and Munch. Munch’s 1895 painting, “The Scream”, earned $120 million at an auction in NY in 2012.
Presale estimate: around $30 million. The highest prices were for Amedeo Modigliani and Roy Lichtenstein, with the hammer falling at $170.4 million and $95.37 million.
“To me, art collecting is primarily a process of learning about art”, he said in an interview with The NY Times in 2013. Three Picassos have sold at auction for at least $100 million since 2004, the Times reported. The victor was a client of Conor Jordan, Christie’s deputy chairman of Impressionist and modern art in NY.
The previous auction record for a Modigliani was USD71 million.

Paul Gauguin’s carved wood sculpture of a woman, “Therese” (1902-1903), fetched $30.9 million, surpassing the high estimate of $25 million. Despite not selling all the art, Christie’s was still able to bring in a total of $494.4 million. Failed to sell.
