In court, Barrett made a brief statement in which he apologized to “the Ohio State football program and Buckeye Nation”.

While Barrett was not in uniform Saturday, the captain was very much a presence at the game.

Ohio State was up a touchdown with two minutes left on Saturday, but a 38-yard touchdown run by redshirt junior quarterback Cardale Jones clinched the game.

The differences between Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett are obvious and well documented by now after months of scrutiny of Ohio State’s talented quarterbacks and their back-and-forth battle. Meyer said Bosa is as disruptive as any player he has been around.

Senior offensive tackle Taylor Decker also pointed to Barrett’s running ability as what makes him stand out from the crowd.

“I think he’ll be all right”. Still, the Buckeyes have one tune up game against IL before facing MI State and MI in their final two games.

“He’s blocking, he’s our best blocker”, Meyer said. “I was never concerned that it would be a ding that would hold him out”. The team went on to win the national championship and Barrett finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting.

“I just want to do whatever it takes to help the team win”. Previously, OSU had been the favorite by itself at those odds and Alabama was 5/1. Barrett was suspended for one game but is considered the starter heading into the No. 2 Buckeyes’ game at IL.

“He’s one of our more consistent performers not just on defense but on our team”, Meyer said.

Jones made a couple of big throws, including a 44-yarder to Jalin Marshall, a 45-yarder to Braxton Miller and a 6-yard touchdown pass to Michael Thomas. Defensive linemen Joel Hale, Mike Hill, Tyquan Lewis, Adolphus Washington and Sam Hubbard, linebackers Darron Lee, Raekwon McMillan and Joshua Perry, and cornerback Eli Apple were named champions.
