Arrieta, Rizzo lead Cubs over Cards in doubleheader opener

Louis Cardinals in a day-night doubleheader to gain two games on the National League Central leaders.

Beeler tried to help his cause with a third-inning lead-off double to the center-field wall on Cooney’s first pitch. The Cardinals gave Motte a bit of trouble after he gave up a couple singles to lead off the inning.

Lawrie pulled an 0-2 breaking ball just inside the left-field foul pole for his eighth home run.

Rizzo set a modern franchise record in the first inning of the second game when he was hit by a pitch for the 18th time. He also got some timely help from one of his teammates. Cardinals left-right hander Seth Maness (3-1) pitched one inning and was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Lackey has thrown at least seven innings and allowed two or fewer runs in five consecutive starts.
