A vehicle hit a campus police officer at a small, private school in SC on Monday night, and he fired into the auto, fatally shooting a person inside, authorities said.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the SMC break-ins are being investigated in connection with similar cases at Gardner Webb University.
Simmons, according to investigators, fled to a vehicle and an officer pursued. Oliver Mylik Chandler, a student who was also attending Limestone, is another alleged suspect and was arrested by the police, according to a statement released by the college administration.
“I haven’t seen them so I can’t answer what was seen and what was not seen”, Wright said.
Authorities say the officer fired on Simmons, killing him.
According to the Spartanburg County coroner’s office, the name of the dead student was identified as Delvin Tyrell Simmons, 20 years old.
In Surfside Beach on Tuesday, Horry County Police Lt. Raul Denis said an officer stopped a woman’s auto after a shoplifting report from a Surfside Beach store. The officer feared for his life and defended himself by shooting into the vehicle, Bobo said. The officer was unhurt. “We are trained to do try our best to stay out of those situations but sometimes our duty calls us to be in just those spots”, he said.
Teresa Ferguson, the Spartanburg Methodist College police chief, did not return phone and email messages Wednesday seeking comment about the incident.

Chandler was a former member of the football and track teams but was suspended from Limestone for academic reasons in May 2015, the college said. Berry said there was no dash cam or body camera video of the incident.
