Wimbledon 2015: Coco Vandeweghe sinks Lucie Safarova for last-eight spot
Her quest for major title No. 21, the Grand Slam and the Serena Slam (holding all four majors at once) continues Wednesday against the victor of the match between No. 23 Victoria Azarenka and No. 30 Belinda Bencic.

Having taken care of Czech world number 11 Karolina Pliskova in the second round and demolishing ex- US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the next to surpass her best grand slam run, she again rose to the challenge against left-hander Safarova.
“She is noticeably happy, but still very hungry and risky”. “I think it’s going to inspire everyone else to keep doing well and keep working hard”. It is the first time in 11 years that three American women have advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals. The other two are top-ranked Serena Williams and Madison Keys (21). Vandeweghe has three wins over a top-10 player since 2014.
Venus came in playing stronger than she has in years. Vandeweghe played Williams during the championship match of Bank of the West Classic in 2012. Novak Djokovic and Kevin Anderson were tied at 2 sets apiece when the match was suspended because of darkness.
Coco Vandeweghe is coming off a straight sets win over Lucie Safarova, which lasted almost two hours. “At the start of the season, she really placed a full commitment to the gym which makes my job easier regarding gains in strength and power”. CoCo broke from her father, Robert Kennis Mullarkey, when her parents moved to the West Coast, only reluctantly visiting him back on Long Island when forced by court visitation rulings.
After graduating from Dickinson High, Elis attended Dickinson State University for one year and then transferred to the University of North Dakota where he received his doctorate in physical therapy in 2009.
“My mom is just a ’60s child and we all have nicknames, and none of us go by our real names”, Vandeweghe said.
This was the 26th meeting between the sisters, the 12th at a Grand Slam and the sixth at Wimbledon. Vandeweghe reached the third round in the Australian Open and lost in the opening match of the French Open. Sharapova saves them both with some forceful tennis but then gives up another with an awkward forehand into the net.

“My father and I don’t get along”. I’ve met some great people along the way and have experienced cultures very different from my North Dakota roots.
