Newborn found dead outside Chicago high-rise was beaten

A newborn baby girl was badly beaten before she was left to die in the cold outside a high-rise in Uptown late Wednesday night, according to the coroner. Though there are three cameras at the apartment building, they may not have been in a position to catch whoever abandoned her.

Shocking discovery: A man visiting his girlfriend was shocked to see the child in the middle of a fall storm outside of the 800 block of West Eastwood Avenue (pictured). She was taken a block away to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the death early Thursday.

“The hospital is right here, so if you was going to put the baby down, if you walked this far to put the baby here, another block wouldn’t make too much difference”, neighbor Alice Nelson said.

They are looking into whether a camera at a nearby school may have recorded better footage.

Police said investigators do not yet know the girl’s identity, or who her parents are.

Dawn Geras of the Save Abandoned Babies Foundation said she was disappointed that the mother did not take the baby to a safe place to be surrender to authorities instead of beating the baby and leaving her to die.

Police say that when they find the mother she will face murder charges.
