Sumter shows appreciation in first Veterans Day parade since 1987

World War II Army veteran Rudolfo Magdaleno said he’s grateful he survived the war, but he knows many veterans are struggling.

A moment of silence was observed at 11 a.m. for one minute to honor all veterans.

Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day in that Veterans Day honors living veterans while Memorial Day honors those who have died. On November 11, 1918 the Allied Nations and Germany agreed to end hostilities, paving the way for the Treaty of Versailles to officially end World War I.

Army sergeant Matthew Jones is a Vietnam veteran. “So be a little patient with a few of the workers you got when they come back home”.

On Wednesday, Barren County held Veteran’s Day programs at many of their schools in honor of our military.

OLD CITY–For the first time in Philadelphia’s history, a Veterans Day Parade celebrated those who put it all on the line. “We should have had it before, but we’re working hard to get it done”, said Williams.

Whitmire said they wanted the ceremony to show support for Vietnam War veterans, who she said were not received well after the war like veterans of World War I and World War II were. It’s called Operation Welcome Home and is organized by the State Department of Veterans Affairs.

They saw active duty service members, Junior ROTC units and those who served long ago, like Gaylon Jack did during the Korean War.

At American worldwide College’s Veterans Day commemoration, Geromini, Henry and many other veterans were reminded of how much their sacrifice is appreciated every day.

“People coming back from Desert Storm and there’s ticker tape parades and there’s recognition of veterans with parades”, said Geromini. Donnie Repaci who died at the age of 20 in Vietnam, epitomized the focus of this year’s Community Walk – to honor and thank those who served, as organized by Bruce Winningham, a founder of the Covenant of Military Care.
