Gary Ward, Chuck Henson and Hank Foley said in an official statement that additional help will be available for students in light of the recent situation on campus and law enforcment will be present at organized events for students. Police say someone spray-painted over a portion of a sign early Thursday at the center. The sign was reportedly painted at about 12:50 a.m. and police said they were reviewing surveillance footage of the area.
“We were walking back from Rollins Late Night and as we turned the corner, we heard someone yell, ‘Black motherfuckers, you’re not welcome here, ‘” Jahns said. “You clearly are”, along with what appeared to be a picture of the sign.
“I tried calling MUPD and they would not pick up their phones”, Jahns said. The building was not evacuated.
In 2010, two white male students were arrested for dropping cotton balls in front of the GOBCC. The students responsible were later convicted of misdemeanor littering charges. The incident has occurred in the wake of week long protests against unchecked racism against Black students on campus that led to the president resigning. The same day, posts made on the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak warned students not to come to the campus and threatened that black people would be shot.
