Russian tourist acid attacked in Varanasi

Thursday night when she was fast asleep on the terrace of the house, someone threw the acid at her.

A 23-year-old Russian suffered severe burns in an acid attack Friday while she was sleeping in the Indian holy city of Varanasi, the latest in a series of attacks on women tourists.

The victim was identified as Darya Yurieva, it is reported that she has been in India for about four months now.

The police say the man threw a bottle of acid on the woman after an argument.

Pankaj Srivastav, uncle of suspect Siddharth Srivastav said that he heard commotion around 5 am.

The woman was rushed to Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of BHU, where she is undergoing treatment for injuries on her body and face, Senior Superintendent of Police Akash Kulhary said, adding the accused, Siddharth, is absconding. According to Siddharth’s father, she used to go for a walk at the Ganga ghat every morning.

“He had bought 2.5 litres of sulphuric acid from a medical shop two days ago”. The two, the police said, had recently travelled together to Ladakh and were believed to be involved.
