Facebook has revealed that its new data centre will be located in Fort Worth, Texas, and will be powered exclusively by renewable energy.

“200 MW is more energy than we will need for the foreseeable future, and we’re proud to have played a role in bringing this project to Texas“, said Facebook’s director of data center operation for the western region, Ken Patchett. Until this week, few knew that the firm had selected Fort Worth. The Menlo Park, California, company’s only overseas data center is in Sweden.
From left, Dr. Michael Williams, the president of the UNT Health Science Center, and TCU Chancellor Victor Boschini Jr. announce the formation of a new medical school in Fort Worth. The computers put in Facebook’s data centres hoard billions of videos and photos in addition to the updates and messages that the service’s users post through the social network every day. While the company isn’t disclosing full cost and capacity plans for the data center, the spokesperson said that “we have publicly committed to at least 40 full-time jobs and $500 million in investment”.
He said the ability to build the wind generator farm was important in Facebook’s location decision.
With more people joining Facebook, and the internet, it’s safe to say that more tech companies will build additional datacenters in the coming years.
“It’s been overwhelming the response we’ve gotten”, Boschini said.

Facebook is still growing rapidly daily, the amount of data and information is massive and the computing powers of its current offices may not be sufficient enough for people’s daily activities online. The social media company also announced that it plans to draw 50 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2018. “Texas has been the leading exporting state in the United States of America for 13 years running”. Texas is far more than just a leader in job creation. “In fact, our goal is to have synergistic growth that will bring new opportunities for all of our programs, especially the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine”.
