Staff at the growing charitable business are allegedly “unbelievably excited” to meet Clooney. The 54-year-old actor drew crowds larger than the project Social Bite had ever seen but also aimed to do a few good by making the appearance and left about $1,000 to help make a difference to those who need it.

Inside, the star handed over a £5 note to buy a small meal or two for the needy, and sampled a sandwich himself.

”I like what they’re doing; I think it’s a very important cause.

They arrived outside Social Bite at 7am and said it was worth the wait for a selfie and a hug with Clooney.

Social Bite co-founder Josh Littlejohn commented: “George is an incredible guy, someone who has achieved real global fame but thinks nothing of visiting a local sandwich shop to chat to the workers and discuss the issue of homelessness”.

Clooney also had an unlikely lunch date in Edinburgh – 32-year-old wedding planner Heather McGowan, who won a competition to dine with the star on Thursday.

He will speak at the Scottish Business Awards at the city’s worldwide conference centre in front of a sold-out, 2,000-strong audience.

And she even grilled him about his high-profile wedding in 2014 to Amal Clooney, telling BBC Newsbeat that “it seems he had a load of involvement which is really refreshing because [grooms] just hand it off to their brides and have no interest whatsoever”.
