That would be Venus versus Serena – the Williams sisters, far from their roots in Compton in their rise to a collective 27 major titles.

“I plan on playing for years but you never know if we’ll have the opportunity to face each other“, she added. I just took the moment in and thought, ‘we’re at Wimbledon.’ I remember when I was 8 years old we dreamed of this moment.

Serena is coming off from a straight-sets victory over against sister Venus, whom she regarded as her best friend in the whole world, in the third round 6-4 6-3.

Serena Williams declared herself ready to roll in her Wimbledon quarter-final showdown with Victoria Azarenka, while Maria Sharapova is wary of surprise package Coco Vandeweghe in Tuesday’s last eight clashes.

All eight Wimbledon quarter-finalists from previous year are out of the tournament, with Serena and Sharapova the only two from the world’s top 12 who are still standing.

Serena set aside any family qualms to deny Venus what could be one of her best remaining chances for an eighth grand slam title.

The 33-year-old hit 36 winners and 10 aces to secure her 14th win in 26 meetings with her older sister, but it was clear that neither sibling enjoyed the experience.

An opponent who, unlike most others, pounds serves at 121 miles per hour, as she did Monday, and returns the 115 miles per hour serves Venus hits. “So when that moment is over, it will be over”.

Speaking to Mary Carillo during the Tennis Channel broadcast of Wimbledon, Keys spoke of her first motivation to get pick up a racket and start to play tennis.

Venus, meanwhile, had to save five break points on her own serve otherwise the margin would have been wider.

As for the match, “it was really good for me to get it done in straight sets and just put this behind me and move forward”, she said.

This matchup between five-time champions at the All England Club was one-sided, done in 68 minutes. It also marks their first meeting at a grand slam since the 2009 Wimbledon finals which Serena took. “Very aggressive”, said Serena’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. Vika, who is the 23rd seed, has never reached a final at the Wimbledon since making her debut in 2006.

Novak Djokovic is developing a nasty habit of playing Grand Slam matches over two days.

“Hopefully it will come a little later in the tournament, but I definitely think it could present itself again”.

“I don’t think she’s done, so we’ll see what more she does”.

Keys won3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The 47th-ranked Vandeweghe surprised French Open runner-up and sixth-seeded Lucie Safavora 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4).

Vasek Pospisil came from two sets down to overcome No. 22 Viktor Troicki 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

“The level she’s playing at is unprecedented”.
