Australia will create a new defence and foreign affairs compact with Germany under a deal between Malcolm Turnbull and his counterpart, Angela Merkel, that dramatically broadens a $17 billion economic relationship, with an eye to huge export growth as well.
They also discussed “peaceful coexistence with Muslims fighting Islamic State”, Merkel said, noting there had been an important exchange of views between herself and Turnbull on the subject.
German authorities increased security measures at public places such as train stations and Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said more extremists could be on the run.
“It’s a matter for the German governments as it is for the Australian government to manage this challenge in their own way”, he said.
Dr Merkel, who marks 10 years in office on November 22, has been at the heart of European talks on the refugee crisis and had taken a few political heat for her humanitarian approach.
But Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel warned against making Germany less welcoming to refugees in response to the attacks.
Goal correspondent Loic Tanzi, who was in attendance at the Stade de France, reported after match: “I came out of the stadium and people were crying: “they are going to shoot me!, they are going to shoot me!”.
He added she is protected by an “armour of popularity” but admitted: “The situation is not flattering for the chancellor, a loss of power is quite evident”.
Seehofer rejected the assertion.

“We are of course happy that we have landed safely, but our thoughts are with the relatives and the victims”, said Bierhoff, speaking after the team landed in Frankfurt on Saturday.
