Lions place CB Rashean Mathis on IR with concussion

The season for Detroit cornerback Rashean Mathis is literally over.

Lions trainer Kevin Bastin said this week that team doctors did not initially realize the headaches were related to a hit Mathis took against the Vikings because Mathis twice passed concussion testing during the game.

It was decided that Mathis would be placed on IR because of a concussion that he suffered in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings. He did not make the trip with the team to London.

Butler spent the 2015 training camp with the Lions before joining the Seattle Seahawks. Nevin Lawson will likely get another start across from Darius Slay. Mathis has one year remaining on a two-year, $3.5 million deal he signed this past offseason.

Taking Mathis’ spot on the 53-man roster is veteran Crezdon Butler, who the team signed Saturday after Butler had a workout in Allen Park on Friday.

The Lions also promoted rookie safety Isaiah Johnson from the practice squad with fellow safety Isa Abdul-Quddus (foot) questionable.

Johnson, who has 48 catches for 659 yards in eight games, sprained his ankle in the Lions’ Week 8 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
