NY Steps Up Security After Paris Attacks

In a show of solidarity, he has ordered One World Trade Center to remain lit in blue, white and red.

Andrew Cuomo said Saturday that he has directed state agencies to be on high alert following the attacks and has beefed up security protocols on trains, bridges and popular tourists locations.

Law-enforcement officials and transportation agencies in the NY metropolitan area stepped up security measures over the weekend in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks.

A US official briefed by the Justice Department said intelligence officials, however, have detected increased chatter encouraging an attack on the U.S.

Police didn’t say if additional officers would be on hand at the Motion Picture Academy’s annual Governors Awards on Saturday night, but noted it was the type of event that would typically get extra attention from police and private security details. He told the people of Paris that just as the world “has stood by NY in times of tragedy, today NY stands with you”. It said it was increasing patrols and checking of buses and trains and passengers’ bags.

He reminded residents to remain alert and to report any suspicious activity to the Terrorism Tip Line at 1-866-723-3697.

Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services DHSES has been in contact with key local public safety officials following the attacks in Paris.

The French consulate, the mission to the United Nations and “other sites related to France” are being guarded by heavily armed police in the aftermath of mass killings that rocked Paris, authorities said. MA State Police said they took “several actions”, including bolstering security around the State House in Boston.

NYPD counterterrorism forces deployed in the city Friday night to protect French government locations and public places where big crowds gather, a police spokesman said.

Even though there was no known imminent threats, “until we know more, we are deploying more police”, the department said.

One World Trade Center is lit in the Blue White and Red colors of the French flag in honor of the victims of the attacks in Paris in the Manhattan borough of New York
