India’s top court orders investigation into job scam, deaths

The Madhya Pradesh High Court yesterday refused to listen to the state authorities’s plea for a CBI probe and deferred the matter until July 20 citing pendency of an identical plea within the Supreme Court.

He and his son were accused previous year of accepting bribes in a First Information Report or FIR by the Special Task Force of the state police that is investigating the Vyapam scam. The scam came to light in 2013. He used the opportunity to defend his government and also to meet the family of journalist Akshay Singh, who had died under mysterious circumstances in the state while covering the scam.

Rajnath Singh is likely to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday evening. According to sources in the government, Yadav has been given the option to either quit on his own or face dismissal which is possible only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing foreign visit that ends on July 13. Ashish, a lawyer, said the family suspected someone to have placed the snacks at the office intending to harm his father as advocate Trivedi was the counsel of ex- MLA Paras Saklecha, who has moved the high court demanding a CBI inquiry into Dental Medical Admission Test (DMAT) for private medical colleges.

Calling the Vyapam scam probe his “trial by fire”, Chouhan said he was “grateful” to the Supreme Court for accepting his request and ordering a CBI probe and urged the agency to begin investigation at the earliest to bring out the truth.

The AG said, “We have acceded to CBI probe and for it to be monitored by the Supreme Court is entirely upto you (apex court)”. The Supreme Court by transferring the case to CBI has expressed its dissatisfaction in the scam investigations so far. Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Indira Jaising and Vivek Tankha were appeared for the Petitioner. He said most of the deaths were due to natural causes. The apex court observed that no more deaths will take place now.

South Carolina transfers all Vyapam cases to CBI after Attorney General tells court that the agency can probe the case. While figures vary, SIT has counted the death toll to 36.

The people arrested include a ex- education minister and an aide to the state’s governor.
