Price said he thought he was breaking up a fistfight when Mohammad charged at him with the knife, stabbing him in the side.

Officials also found petroleum jelly, which Warnke explained is flammable and is at times called “the poor man’s C-4”, referring to the military-grade explosive.

‘You see this stuff all over the news and stuff and you see it happen to all these other schools, ‘ but you don’t expect it to happen at your school, he said. “I think he prevented this first student from dying”.

In the later news conference, Warnke stressed that focusing on Mohammad’s religious beliefs would be unfounded.

Mohammad’s plan for revenge discussed his anger with being kicked out of the study group, the sheriff said, but he didn’t know why the computer science and engineering major was excluded from the group.

Outside the classroom, the suspect attacked a female staff member and slightly injured the second student, Warnke said.

All the victims were conscious when paramedics reached them, Assistant Vice Chancellor Patti Waid said.

“He had a smile on his face, he was having fun”, the construction worker told a local television station.

“Every time I would try and say something, he would just ignore it”, said Andrew Velasquez, who was Mohammad’s roommate.

The attack happened just before 8 a.m.in a classroom in the Classroom and Office Building, according to university officials.

The document also included several references to Allah, the sheriff said.

Despite his injury, he said, “I feel like what I did was right….”

“We had an upset teenager that got upset because he got kicked out of study group”, he said.

The school says a student remained hospitalized Thursday, and a staff member who suffered a collapsed lung was recovering after surgery.

Byron Price, 31, was helping remodel a waiting room on the campus when he heard a commotion Wednesday and rushed to see what it was.

At the smallest University of California campus, with fewer than 7,000 enrolled, the students are close-knit and consider each other family, and many say, “everybody knows everybody”. He would take students prisoner in a classroom, ambush the police officers who came to rescue them and use their guns to kill more people.

Merced County Sheriff Verne Warnke said an investigation is underway to determine the motive of the attack.

Mohammed was shot by two officers after he turned toward them during his attempted escape, UC Merced Police Chief Al Vasquez said.
