Sergio Garcia shot an 8-under 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the drizzly BMW Masters on Thursday.

DAVID Howell had an uneventful second round in Shanghai in the penultimate European Tour tournament of the season. So I’m happy with that and we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.

The leading Australian is Marcus Fraser who is in 20th position and eight shots from the lead with Scott Hend another two shots further back. “When I read the line well I feel like the putt can only go in the hole and you don’t have this feeling many times during the year, so it feels great”.

Starting on the back nine, Bjerregaard got off to a laboured start, making a gain on the first hole and a string of pars lead up to his second birdie on the 16th, which was followed by a bogey. “I have pretty good confidence after winning in Germany (at the European Open in September)”, said Thongchai, a late bloomer who did not turn professional until he was 30.

He recorded a birdie four at the 15th and produced a few good work around the greens to close out his round and finish at nine under, alongside Thongchai, who mixed six birdies with two bogeys under grey and gloomy skies in China.

“I think my game plan this week is good”. Kristoffer Broberg almost matched Pieters after an eagle three at the seventh ignited a sparkling run of 10 holes played in nine-under par. “It hurts, but at the same time, I know what I’m working on right now is definitely the right thing because I’m moving in the right direction”.

“It was nice in Hong Kong to prove to myself and to everyone else that I can still compete up there”, the 24-year-old said.

England’s Danny Willett just needs to finish solo 28th or better in the 78-man field, while Shane Lowry, Louis Oosthuizen and Rose must finish second or better and Branden Grace requires a win.
