“‘I think it’s incredible that people still care about people that they never met before, that are in different countries, and that we’re praying for them”, Lopez said.

“It’s really hard because we are like all here and our families are back in Paris, our friends”, said one woman. French exchange students made up the majority of the crowd.

As news came in Friday evening of the attacks, dozens gathered in NY City’s Union Square for a vigil, singing the French national anthem “La Marseillaise”, Gothamist reported.

Jonathan Pradel, an event organiser, said it isn’t just about people remembering those who have died but to show that people of all back grounds are willing to stand strong in the face of fear. For me it’s mainly about making the English, French and global community stand together against terror.

French officials have identified one of the seven assailants responsible for Friday’s terrorist attacks that killed at least 132 people in Paris.

Parents took part with children, many of them holding small red, white and blue French flags.

The Sage in Gateshead and the Millennium Bridge have also displayed the colours of the Tricolore.

The nation is expected to hold a minute’s silence on Monday at 11am, to coincide with the French service at noon as France enters three days of national mourning.

“Now the best thing the French people can do is just go back to their normal lives and show that we are not defeated”.
