Meeks leads No. 1 North Carolina to opening win over Temple

The OR women’s basketball team opened its season with a stunning upset of No. 22 North Carolina, 79-77, in Chapel Hill on Sunday. Standout guard Marcus Paige broke his hand in practice earlier this month, leaving Joel Berry II to run the point in his absence.

There are more hard opponents ahead, but for most of the evening Sunday it was far too close for an anxious Smith Center crowd that will continue to expect perfection from this team and probably isn’t wrong.

North Carolina remained comfortably in front during the second half, and Williams began substituting liberally with 6 minutes left and the Tar Heels up by 18. The Tar Heels’ defense was lead by Sheila Doyle who collected 26 digs in the three sets. The thing is, we’re improving. North Carolina had a 15-9 edge on the offensive glass.

The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team was swept by No. 25 North Carolina Friday evening at Carmichael Arena.

“He just challenged us: If we loved the game, why are we playing like that?”

There were times they looked like they were rushing when they did not need to, and times when they were searching for something and did not appear to know how to find it.

Marcus Paige fidgeted slightly, remembering the discomfort of the moment, the suffocation of his own suit.

Miami rushed for 99 yards on 32 attempts – continuing the trend of the O-Line not getting any push at the point of attack.

Cook came into the game with the Terps completing just over 60 percent of his passes; in a clear sign that the shoulder was bothering him, the senior completed just 6-of-20 passes before being taken out for good. The stands were awash in Carolina blue shortly after tipoff of the first game, which featured the Tar Heels going up against Temple.

Freshman Maite Cazorla had a dazzling debut, finishing with nine points, nine assists, four steals and just two turnovers.

He did not play rushed and got his shots in the flow of the offense while also finding available shots for his teammates. It ended a frustrating evening, but one that the Owls hope they can learn from against a team that should administer quite a few lessons this season. They didn’t put the game away until the final 10 minutes against the Stags (0-2), who hit 10 3-pointers that kept them hanging around longer than expected.

His season is off to a promising start. Tar Heels running back Elijah Woods ran for a game-high 132 yards with a touchdown.

But many of those numbers came after Coach Williams laid into his team at the break-something Pinson’s fellow sophomore, Justin Jackson, described to the media.

Duke forward Amile Jefferson added 19 points and 12 rebounds, and freshman Brandon Ingram tacked on 15 points in his collegiate debut.

Despite the time it took to get the ball rolling, senior forward Brice Johnson finshed with a double-double, posting 16 points and 11 rebounds.
