After finishing in the game in front, McDowell admitted he was resigned to losing out to Knox and said he would have no complaints about that due to the confidence his fellow Brit had been displaying.

“I dreamed of this day coming again”, McDowell said. “The last couple days, so far, the attitude’s been good”.

Graeme McDowell produced the shot of a champion to win the rain-delayed OHL Classic at Mayakoba after a play-off against Russell Knox and Jason Bohn.

The 2010 US Open victor admits the barren run – his last victory anywhere was at the French Open 16 months ago – left him questioning his ability after dropping out of the world’s top 50.

But the 36-year-old from Northern Ireland had such a mediocre season that he returned to America to get a head start on the new PGA Tour season.
