Netflix will be the sole provider for the show in the USA and Discovery Canada, who commissioned the series, will distribute the show in Canada. Netflix acquired the rights and will broadcast the series exclusively outside of Canada. The series is produced by Take the Shot Production and Factory Backwards, in association with Discovery, which will serve as the exclusive Canadian broadcaster, and Netflix.

The series is a period piece that takes place in the late 18th century, following the struggle of men from many different cultures to control the fur trade in the area.

The drama, which was created by Peter Blackie and Rob Blackie (Republic of Doyle), stars Momoa as Declan Harp, a ruthless, brutish and ambitious trader who is full of charisma, but is driven by lust and revenge. Momoa is also set to play Aquaman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman, though audiences haven’t yet seen him be appropriately sexy and violent in any of that film’s released footage.

Frontiers will premiere exclusively on Netflix (outside of Canada) in 2016. And behind the camera for the first two episodes is Canadian director Brad Peyton, whose recently directed the big-screen disaster epic San Andreas. It will join a jam-packed slate of high profile new series that Netflix has scheduled to kick off next year, including Marvel’s Luke Cage, the Fuller House reboot, and the Ashton Kutcher series, The Ranch.
