Sen. Bill Nelson to undergo prostate cancer surgery

Florida Senator Bill Nelson, 72, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, his office announced Thursday evening. Extensive scans showed no evidence that the cancer had spread.

The cancer was found during a routine medical exam, and doctors have told Nelson there are no signs of the cancer spreading.

Nelson added that his diagnosis does not affect his plan to run for re-election in 2018, according a release.

The Democrat from Florida now has no symptoms, according to Nelson’s press secretary.

In the statement, Nelson says he has been blessed with good health and looks forward to continue serving.

He won a third Senate term in 2012, easily beating GOP Rep. Connie Mack IV.
